The Role

The Director of Photography is the visual author of the film — the person who works with the director to define how the story looks, feels, and moves. At Indie Matter, we look for DOPs who approach each project as a distinct visual problem, not an opportunity to apply a house style. Independent cinematography demands both creative authority and practical discipline: the ability to make bold visual choices within tight constraints, to light quickly and authentically, and to build a camera and lighting team that operates as a single creative instrument.

FAQ

Do you work with DOPs who own their own camera packages?

Yes, though kit ownership is not a requirement. We assess the DOP's creative portfolio first.

Are DOPs expected to operate as well as light?

On smaller productions, yes. On larger shoots, the DOP may have a dedicated camera operator.

Does the DOP have input into the camera and lighting crew?

Yes — we work collaboratively to crew up the department around the DOP's preferences wherever possible.
