The Production Designer is the visual world-builder of the film — the person who designs every physical space the camera enters and every object within it. On an independent production, the PD must be both an artist and a pragmatist: building a design vision that serves the script's emotional and thematic requirements, then executing it resourcefully within the limits of what is available. We look for production designers with a strong aesthetic point of view, experience working on modest budgets, and the ability to lead and inspire an art department team.

No — locations are managed by the location manager. The PD works closely with locations to adapt and dress found spaces.
Do production designers provide concept art and pre-vis as part of their role?
Yes — visual development including mood boards, concept sketches, and floor plans is a standard part of the prep process.
How large are art departments on Indie Matter productions?
Lean — typically the PD, an art director or set decorator, and one or two standby props. We build departments to fit the script.
