The Make-Up Artist prepares actors for camera — creating character-appropriate looks that hold consistently across a shooting day and across the edit. On an independent film, the MUA often manages both make-up and basic hair, and may be the sole department head rather than part of a larger team. The best film MUAs combine technical skill with emotional intelligence: making actors feel comfortable and confident in the chair while delivering a look that serves the character and photographs well in the chosen lighting environment.

FAQ
Do make-up artists at Indie Matter also handle prosthetics?
Simple prosthetics may be within scope. Significant prosthetic work would involve a specialist prosthetics artist.
Is the MUA expected to manage hair as well as make-up?
On smaller productions, yes. On features with a larger cast, we aim to have dedicated hair and make-up.
Do make-up artists supply their own kit?
Yes — all make-up artists are expected to supply a full professional kit as part of their rate.
