On an independent film, a great boom operator is physically disciplined, spatially intelligent, and exceptionally focused. They follow performance instinctively, communicate with the mixer via headphone throughout the take, and adapt instantly when blocking changes. The best boom operators are nearly invisible on set and irreplaceable in the sound edit.
