The Role

The Second Assistant Director is the connective tissue between the production office and the set. They manage cast movement — issuing call sheets, arranging pick-ups, ensuring actors are in the right place at the right time. On an independent production, the 2nd AD often absorbs broader responsibilities than on a larger shoot: first contact for supporting artists, extras paperwork, and close liaison with the production coordinator. Organisation, warmth with talent, and the ability to stay three steps ahead are the hallmarks of a great indie 2nd AD.

Is 2nd AD work at Indie Matter set-based or office-based?

Primarily set-based during production, with prep work coordinated remotely or from our London base.

Would a 2nd AD also take on 2nd 2nd duties on smaller shoots?

Yes. On smaller productions the 2nd AD may absorb some 2nd 2nd functions, particularly on short film shoots.

Is drama experience a requirement?

Drama is our primary output, so it is strongly preferred. Commercial or music video experience is a useful addition.
